Ecology, Conservation & Restoration

FLA can provide ecological survey assessments, design and planning for historically or environmentally sensitive landscapes and building projects. We can help you to minimise impacts on the natural environment and advise on solutions to reduce the ecological footprint or proposals, including wildlife and habitat mitigation.

Ecology surveys and assessments are required for many types of project and need to be submitted with planning applications to make sure that the planners have sufficient information on which to base their decision.

FLA work includes Phase 1 Habitat Wildlife Surveys such as: ecological appraisals, bat and barn owls, nesting/breeding birds, dormouse, otter and badger surveys. FLA also provides through our approved partner consultants, European Protected Species (EPS) Licensing, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), desk top studies, habitat restoration and monitoring, watching briefs, Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) and plant surveys.

The main piece of national planning policy relevant to ecology is Planning Policy Statement 9 (PPS9) , and the two main relevant pieces of legislation are the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010.

FLA’s in-house ecologists can undertake such services for you and will be able to recommend any necessary mitigation to ensure the project gains planning permission whilst maintaining the ecological interest of the site.

Once planning is approved for your development, FLA can also help you through to the construction phase and beyond, obtaining any necessary licences, undertaking watching briefs during construction and post construction monitoring.

Involving FLA’s experienced and qualified ecologists will help reduce delays and meet legal requirements, ultimately saving you time and money.

Restoration

With an in-depth understanding of the scientific, historical and visual components of landscape, FLA has the technical competence necessary to achieve commercially successful outcomes to complex planning issues. Over the years we have developed systems for enabling successful planting in inhospitable environments or empathetic solutions to historical restoration sites.

Minerals Planning – Quarries and Landfill

The development of live and former mineral extraction sites represents one of the most complex and constantly-evolving areas in landscape and ecological design.

Our work has assisted in achieving several significant planning permissions and allocations for a variety of mineral sites, through both the planning application and appeal processes.

Among the services we offer are:

  • liaison with Mineral Planning Authorities
  • planning application preparation
  • development of site working and restoration plans
  • planning appeals
  • input into Environment Act 1995 ROMP schemes
  • Surveys for protected species and other animals
  • Invasive species advice and licensing
  • Biodiversity
  • Habitat creation
  • Ecological Clerk of Works banking
  • BREEAM and Ecohomes components
  • Soil and landform erosion assessment
  • Arboricultural Impact Assessment
  • Arboricultural Method Statements
  • Tree protection
  • Tree surgery
  • British Standard Tree Survey

Renewable energy has become more attractive to developers with the introduction of financial incentives under the Renewables Obligation Scheme and, from the 1st April 2010, the Feed-In Tariffs (FIT). The latest news on the government’s renewable energy policy including the UK renewable energy roadmap and Feed-in Tariffs can be found on the renewable energy pages of the Department for Energy & Climate Change (DECC) .
